Canadian physician Gabor Maté defines “acting out” as “portraying behavior that which you haven’t got the words to say in language.” My mixed media drawings are an attempt to communicate emotional and physical distress that accompanies brain and spine trauma. Following a car accident in the summer of 2013, this series’ foundation borrows from my MRI brain scan imagery and incorporates impromptu mark making, suggestive of varied and unpredictable aspects of mind and body suffering. Specifically, these drawings aim to make visual the optic disturbances and the nearly indescribable head pain associated with damage to the greater and lesser occipital nerves, known as Occipital Neuralgia.
